My dramaturgy.

“Why this play now?”

This is one of the most important questions a dramaturg can ask. So of course, I ask it before starting my dramaturgical process. The question of, “Why this play now?” allows the dramaturg – and the rest of the performance’s team – to confront and streamline the reason behind a chosen show’s being. This is in no way to say that there are shows not worth doing (every show is worth doing) but asking this question allows the team to be on the exact same page as to why this iteration is being done now.

“How can I help?”

I have been lucky enough to have learned a lot about what a dramaturg is capable of; that is to say, nearly everything they may be asked of while on a process. Because of the extensive nature of a dramaturg’s job, this is the second question I ask when working on a process. When working as a dramaturg, my goal is to make the process as easy as possible for its director; whether that be through constructing a lobby display, writing up an actors’ packet, or coordinating a meet-and-greet, I will always be asking how I can help the process.
